Calamity Jane

REVIEW - CALAMITY JANE

Dang blasted good show

It's not often that I feel compelled to write a letter but after being a minor cog (back stage) in CF5's production of Calamity Jane last week, I felt I just had to.

Now, having performed in CF5's (then Coleford Theatre Group) previous production of Calamity Jane in 1993, I was secretly hoping that it would not reach the heights that I felt the earlier production had scaled. Unfortunately, it did. It not only attained the level of the 1993 effort but in many ways surpassed it.

Taking nothing away from the 1993 show which I thought was the bee's knees, the 2012 version was truly superb.

Maddy Flagg, as Calamity, was exceptional with the able support of Paul Drake as Wild Bill Hickcock and the rest of the wonderful cast, the production flowed from one scene to the next with effortless aplomb.

Everyone on stage had a great time and that seemed to spur each audience (especially Friday night's) to do the same thing.

It didn't seem to matter that the odd Somerset and even Brummie accent came to the surface on occasions, it just felt right somehow.

Anyone who did not attend missed a "dang blasted" good show.
